Jer 7:23-25
Thus says the LORD: This is what I commanded my people: Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper. But they obeyed not, nor did they pay heed. They walked in the hardness of their evil hearts and turned their backs, not their faces, to me.
Commentary:
To turn one’s back on someone when they are speaking to you shows an unwillingness to listen and means that you lack trust in that person speaking. Addiction hardens our hearts and causes us to turn our backs to God. But God still speaks to the addict despite the addictive behaviors inviting us to walk in the ways he commands us so we may prosper in recovery. He does this because his greatest command is to love, and He loves the addict.
