Learning to Follow

Matthew 9: 9 As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me”. And he got up and followed him.

Commentary:

For the addict to follow another person’s lead, like in following the lead of a sponsor, is as difficult as walking on water. The step work with a sponsor allows the addict to make progress in learning how to follow, and why it is important for them to follow. One important lesson I learned from working the steps and learning how and why to follow was learning the meaning of the saying, “Let go, and Let God.” I discovered through the step work that for me to be able to let God lead me, I needed to let go of my false attitudes about God’s love for me, and the anger and resentment I felt towards those that hurt me. I wish I could say it was a one time process of letting go of past hurts, but I can say that when I feel those past hurts and false attitudes now, I give them over to Jesus, and he releases me from their destructive nature. It is progress not perfection.
